How to Find Construction Jobs to Bid On

Feb 8, 2023 | Blog, Job Bidding

When you are just getting started as a contractor, one of the more confusing things to deal with is how to find construction jobs to bid on. It’s not as hard as you think. There are several ways to find construction jobs to bid on, including:

  • Online job boards and websites: Websites like BidClerk and ConstructConnect provide lists of construction projects open for bidding.
  • Government websites: Local, state, and federal government websites often have information on construction projects that are open for bidding, and may also have procurement notices and request for proposals.
  • Trade associations: Join trade associations related to the construction industry, such as Associated General Contractors, to gain access to job opportunities, bidding information, and industry insights.
  • Networking: Attend industry events, trade shows, and conferences to network with contractors, architects, and engineers, and learn about upcoming construction projects.
  • Subcontracting: Reach out to general contractors in your area and inquire about opportunities to bid on subcontracting work.
  • Local business journals and newspapers: Keep an eye on local business journals and newspapers for information on new construction projects, and follow up with the developers or owners for more information.
  • Direct outreach: Research the companies and developers in your area and reach out to them directly to inquire about bidding opportunities.

To become a member of Associated General Contractors (AGC), you can follow these steps:

  • Visit the AGC website: Go to the AGC website (www.agc.org) and select the “Join” option to start the process of becoming a member.
  • Choose your membership type: AGC offers different membership types, including General Contractor, Specialty Contractor, Associate, and Student. Select the type of membership that best fits your business or industry.
  • Fill out the application form: Fill out the online application form with your contact information, business details, and any other relevant information.
  • Submit payment: Once you have filled out the application form, you will be prompted to submit payment for your AGC membership fee. AGC accepts payments online, by phone, or by mail.
  • Wait for approval: AGC will review your application and notify you of your membership status. If approved, you will receive information on how to access your member benefits, including access to industry events, educational resources, and job opportunities.

Note: The specific membership requirements and fees may vary depending on your location and membership type, so be sure to check the AGC website for the most up-to-date information.

Reaching out to general contractors is a good way to look for opportunities as a subcontractor. Subcontracting work can be a good way to gain experience and build a reputation in the construction industry. When reaching out to general contractors, consider the following tips:

  • Research the contractors: Look for general contractors in your area who are active in the type of construction work you specialize in, and research their projects and reputation.
  • Make a list: Create a list of the contractors you would like to reach out to and gather their contact information, such as their email, phone number, and physical address.
  • Prepare your pitch: Prepare a brief and professional pitch that introduces your company and its capabilities, and highlights your experience and qualifications.
  • Reach out: Contact the contractors on your list and introduce yourself and your company. Offer to provide references or portfolios, and ask if they are interested in working with you on future projects.
  • Follow up: After reaching out, follow up with the contractors to gauge their interest and answer any questions they may have. Be persistent, but respectful, in your follow-up efforts.

By reaching out to general contractors and showcasing your skills and experience, you can build relationships and gain access to new opportunities as a subcontractor in the construction industry.

There is work out there! You just have to go out and find it.

One more suggestion: use a solution like ProfitDig to create professional quality job bids that are more likely to be accepted. When you win a job, you should track your expenses on a line-by-line basis so that you can bid more profitably on future jobs. Good luck!
